Explained: Why There’s No Reserve Day for the India vs England 2024 T20 World Cup Semifinal

Team India is set to face England in the second semifinal of the ICC Men’s 2024 T20 World Cup at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday, June 27. The match will commence at 8:00 PM IST and 10:30 AM local time. This clash brings back memories of their previous semifinal encounter in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Adelaide, where England triumphed over India by 10 wickets.

The Men in Blue have showcased remarkable form in the ongoing World Cup, remaining unbeaten. In their last Super 8 game, they defeated Australia by 24 runs in St Lucia. Meanwhile, England secured their playoff spot by crushing the United States by 10 wickets in their final Super 8 match in Barbados. Prior to this, they beat the West Indies by eight wickets and suffered a loss to South Africa.

Fans of both India and England are eagerly awaiting the semifinal on Thursday, but the weather forecast suggests rain could disrupt the match. Interestingly, while there is a reserve day for the first semifinal (South Africa vs Afghanistan), no such provision exists for the India vs England game.

Why No Reserve Day for India vs England Semifinal?

Both semifinals have an additional 250 minutes allocated for potential delays. However, for the India-England match, this extra time must be used on the scheduled day itself. The absence of a reserve day is due to the tight schedule, with only a day’s gap between this semifinal and the final.

The India vs England semifinal will take place in Guyana, while the 2024 T20 World Cup final is scheduled at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, on June 29. Given this tight schedule, the ICC decided against allotting a reserve day for the India-England semifinal. To consider the match complete in the knockouts, at least 10 overs per innings must be played.

Who Qualifies for the Final if India vs England Semifinal is Washed Out?

If the India vs England semifinal in Guyana ends with no result even after utilizing the 250 additional minutes, the team that finished higher in their respective Super 8 group will progress to the final.

In this scenario, India will advance to the final since they topped Group 1 in the Super 8 stage. Unfortunately for England, they will be knocked out as they finished second in Group 2. If both semifinals are washed out, India and South Africa (who topped Group 2) will move forward to the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The scheduling decisions and the lack of a reserve day for such a crucial match add an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to the tournament.
